Moving The Needle With DJ Five

Moving The Needle With DJ Five

How and when did you first start your career as a DJ?

18 years ago, when I was 15. I saw my brother DJing at like a high school dance or a school dance. From then I wanted to DJ so I saved up a bunch of money and bought my first turn table in like 9th grade. And when I started out, I had one turntable so all I wanted to do was scratch like the radio. And I practiced scratching for like a year or two. I didn't really learn how to mix like 'til like two years later.

Do you remember your first paid gig?

I think it was a like house party and I got paid like maybe like $20 buck and dinner at a Red Lobster or something. But it was all good.

Who were your biggest influences and why?

Back then it was just like DJ Premiere, like Q-bert and Scratch Pickles, and the Beat Junkies. Later on, it was Kid Capri and Funkmaster Flex, and all the party stuff. We used to see their videos come on Yo MTV and I used to bug out. That's when I went yeah, that's what I want to do.

What was playing in household growing up? Do musicians run in the family?

Not really man. My parents are Thai and they listen to Thai music. But pretty much my music influences were around my friends. They'd turn me on to like underground radio stations and stuff.
